Laurie Doering, a McMaster professor of pathology and molecular medicine, has received a Passion in Science Award from New England Biolabs. He was the only Canadian winner recognized in the inaugural competition introduced as part of the company's 40th anniversary celebrations.

Doering was selected in the Inspiration in Science category for his research on astrocyte-based factors that may be able to treat neurons of people with Fragile X syndrome and autism. Doering said: "Passion in science is a desire, a want to do well in science and do something that will benefit society, benefit health in the long term. Passion is being happy and enjoying your work and doing a good job."
