Online resource boosts professional development among McMaster faculty

Published: May 12, 2014

A one-stop online career development resource to help McMaster's health sciences faculty members progress seamlessly through their careers has been launched by the Faculty of Health Sciences.

Coined "Continuing Academic and Scholarly Career Development (CASCaDe)," the resource is a coordinated effort among some of McMaster's most vital professional development services.

"CASCaDe's intent is to support faculty from recruitment to retirement by developing and enhancing skills needed to fulfill one's scholarly and professional responsibilities and aspirations," says Susan Denburg, associate vice-president, academic for the Faculty of Health Sciences. "It aims to ensure that all aspects of career development are addressed in a seamless and coordinated manner."

To access the CASCaDe website, please visit:

Continuing Academic and Scholarly Career Development

Designed by McMaster's Computer Services Unit, the site serves as an entry point to the network of various programs and professional development opportunities that have been organized to help faculty guide and navigate his or her career. Key professional development areas can be found along the top bar with further links and resources on the left, including access to partner sites:  Continuing Health Sciences Education, Faculty of Health Sciences Faculty Relations, Program for Educational Research and Development, Program for Faculty Development and the Program for Interprofessional Practice, Education and Research.

The site also includes a variety of information about research services and the resources available to faculty members including funding, applications and policies, research skills, ethics and CV's, and links to the research resources available on campus. There is also information on enhancing leadership skills, interprofessionalism, clinical excellence and scholarship.

Alan Neville, associate dean, education for the Faculty of Health Sciences, was instrumental in seeing the project through to fruition and says the portal offers both professional development opportunities and collaborative potential among the partner groups. "CASCaDe is a way to get the very best out of the resources we have for our faculty. Also, it allows us to share workshops, discover opportunities for collaboration, and it will keep people informed about workshops, events and opportunities that are forthcoming."

He adds that a second version of the site will launch at a later date. "Version two of the site will involve a customizable feature where faculty can personalize the site to his or her needs allowing them to track events, ideas, and more importantly help faculty members develop their dossier which is required for tenure and promotion."

He calls it one-stop shopping. "All aspects of research, clinical and educational activities are important for faculty members to document for their dossiers and this resource makes the information they require readily available across all aspects of professional development."
