Kates takes chair of psychiatry and behavioural neurosciences

Dr. Nick Kates is now the chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Neurosciences. He had been acting chair of the department since January, 2012.

The appointment, announced by John Kelton, dean and vice-president of the Faculty of Health Sciences, was effective July 1.

A graduate of Charing Cross Medical School in England, Kates joined the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine after completing his residency at the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioural Neurosciences in 1982. Since that time he has been the acting chair, director of the residency program, vice chair clinical, director of the Regional Psychiatry Program and director of financial affairs, as well as serving as acting chief of psychiatry at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton.  He also has an associate membership in the Department of Family Medicine.

Kates has taken provincial and national leadership roles in initiatives that promote more collaboration between mental health and primary care services. His other major academic activities are in community and social psychiatry, global mental health, quality improvement and redesigning systems of care, chronic disease management and innovative approaches to education.

He is a Distinguished Fellow of the Canadian Psychiatric Association and a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, and he has been awarded honourary membership in the College of Family Physicians of Canada
