Kevin Sulewski has been appointed Chief Operating Officer within the Faculty of Health Sciences

Kevin Sulewski has been appointed Chief Operating Officer within the Faculty of Health Sciences.  In making the appointment John Kelton, dean and vice-president of the Faculty said the position will be responsible for executive leadership of the clinical and basic science departments in the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine.

He said: "Some background information is in order. The Faculty of Health Sciences has long prided itself on innovation at every level, including our organizational structure.  This was first exemplified by the matrix model of academic and administrative management.  Over the past decade, we have had a remarkable expansion in scholarship at all levels, particularly within education and research. In many schools, the educational mission has more than doubled with a corresponding increase in research.

"In this new extended role, Kevin will be working with the associate dean, clinical and the dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences to help provide integrative oversight to the departments within the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine.  Reflecting the matrix organization, the chief operating officer's interactions with the departmental managers will complement the interactions the academic chairs have with the associate dean, clinical and the dean for the Faculty of Health Sciences."

Sulewski has been with the Faculty of Health Sciences since 1991 and has held various leadership roles, including his most recent position as executive director of clinical services.  In addition to his role as COO, he will continue as the executive director of the Hamilton Academic Health Services Organization.  He participates as the dean's representative on the board of directors for the Regional Medical Associates, and he is a member of the board of directors for Hamilton Aboriginal Health Centre

He earned a Bachelor of Science from the University of Toronto (1985), a Masters of Health Administration from the University of Ottawa (1987), and a Certificate in Human Resources Management from McMaster University (1999). He holds professional certification with both the Canadian College of Health Leaders and the American College of Healthcare Executives.

As the chief operating officer, he will work closely with the associate deans, department chairs, chief/chairs, departmental managers, and senior hospital executives to advance a shared mission of excellence in patient care, education and research. He will provide guidance, resources and professional development opportunities to help department administrative teams lead their staff and serve their clients. Mr. Sulewski is a valued member of our Faculty Executive Council, the Council of the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine and the Faculty's Operations Group.
