Professor Karen Mossman has stepped into the role of chair of the Department of Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences.

Her appointment, announced by Dr. John Kelton, dean and vice-president of the Faculty of Health Sciences, was effective July 1.

Mossman holds a joint appointment to the Department of Pathology and Molecular Medicine and the Department of Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences. She is a member of the Michael G. DeGroote Institute for Infectious Disease Research and the McMaster Immunology Research Center.

Mossman completed a PhD in biochemistry and a post-doctoral fellowship in molecular virology at the University of Alberta. She initiated her independent research program at McMaster University in 2001.

Mossman’s research program has held continual funding from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR)  since 2002, and she currently holds grants from CIHR and the Canadian Breast Cancer Research Alliance.  She was the recipient of a New Investigator Career Award from R&D/CIHR and the New Investigator and Christina Fleischmann awards from the International Society for Interferon and Cytokine Research.
