Innovative McMaster surgeon wins ORION Award

A McMaster professor who is accelerating medical research and improving health care for Canadians in the areas of minimal access surgery and telerobotic surgery has been honoured for his contributions to research, teaching and learning.

Mehran Anvari, a professor in the Department of Surgery, has been named a 2010 recipient of the ORION Leadership Award. The ORION Awards recognize individuals and groups who have led and championed the use of advanced and collaborative technologies to support research, education and discovery in Ontario or on the global stage.

Anvari is scientific director of the Centre for Surgical Invention and Innovation (CSII) and director of the Centre for Minimal Access Surgery (CMAS). Both research centres are based at St. Joseph’s Healthcare in partnership with McMaster University.
