After an extensive, international search, Dr. Lennox Huang has been appointed chair/chief of the Department of Pediatrics at McMaster University, Hamilton Health Sciences, and St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton for a five-year term beginning Jan. 1, 2011. Huang has led the department as interim chief since 2009 and acting chair since 2010. He is also an associate professor in the Department of Pediatrics, Division of Pediatric Critical Care for the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine.

Prior to coming to Hamilton in 2004, Huang received his MD at the University of Toronto, followed by his residency in pediatrics and a fellowship in pediatric critical care at Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital/Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio. He was then a staff intensivist in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Rainbow Babies and Children’s.

Over the past six years, Dr. Huang has held many administrative positions both at McMaster University and in the hospitals, including acting chair; interim chief; associate chair (clinical), Department of Pediatrics; deputy chief of pediatrics, McMaster Children’s Hospital; interim chief of service, Division of Pediatric Cardiology; and interim chief of service, Division of Pediatric Nephrology.

Dr. Huang is a nationally respected clinician and an award winning educator with interests in patient safety and high-fidelity simulation. In 2009, he was named to the Hamilton Spectator’s Top 40 Under 40 list.

Dr. Huang currently serves as the founding medical director of the pediatric high-fidelity simulation and outreach program at McMaster Children’s Hospital.  This program has a dual focus on patient safety and educational innovation.

"Dr. Huang has already demonstrated dynamic leadership as well as a strong commitment to innovation," said Dr. John Kelton, dean and vice-president, Faculty of Health Sciences, McMaster University.

"We know that the whole pediatric community in the Hamilton region will benefit greatly from Dr. Huang’s dedication to advancing care for our youngest and most vulnerable patients," says Dr. Peter Fitzgerald, President, McMaster Children’s Hospital.

"I am honoured and grateful for the opportunity to lead our department for the next five years," says Dr. Huang. "Over the past few years we have experienced exponential growth in an effort to meet our clinical needs. We have now started to shift our focus to supporting our existing faculty members and expanding our academic mission. In the coming years I see growing recognition of our regional, national and international leadership in pediatrics."
