Bachelor of Health Sciences alumna Laura Shoots has been named an Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Woman of Influence.

The annual award honours female student athletes who have excelled in their chosen sports and fields of study.

"Going through university and being awarded for the things you love to do is unexpected," she said. "It’s a huge honour."

Shoots, a 23-year-old Brantford native, graduated from the Bachelor of Health Sciences program in 2008. She hopes to pursue medicine in the fall.

During her time at McMaster, she earned top marks and consistently made the Dean's Honour List. She also worked with scientists at McMaster and the University of Calgary researching a virus that kills cancer cells but leaves normal cells unharmed.

As a member of the McMaster’s women’s soccer team, Shoots was a four-time Marauder Scholar and Canadian Interuniversity Sport Academic All-Canadian.

She will receive her award at the sixth annual Women of Influence Luncheon on February 10 in Toronto.
