Philanthropist Michael G. DeGroote today cut the ribbons at McMaster University to officially open three international level research institutes which are pledged to advancing human knowledge in the regeneration of human stem cells; the prevention and cures of infectious disease and the development of solutions to chronic pain.

The institutes were part of the vision outlined at the announcement of his $105-million gift to health sciences at McMaster University in December, 2003.

"All of these institutes address major challenges in health care and treatment, and they all provide for wide collaboration among scientists from many disciplines," said Peter George, McMaster University’s president and vice-chancellor. "Their research missions, along with the associated new facilities, make McMaster a most attractive destination for top scientists and clinicians who want to improve health care."

"These institutes are yet another outstanding example of how Michael DeGroote’s vision has propelled the University forward."

All of the institutes are based in the Michael G. DeGroote Centre for Learning and Discovery on campus.
