Rio Tinto Alcan (formerly Alcan), a multinational company and leading full-service provider of many types of packaging, has provided a $1 million endowment to stimulate and support innovation in the renowned health professional education provided by the Faculty of Health Sciences. The endowment funds the John R. Evans Chair in Health Sciences Education Research. Dr. Evans, the founding dean of the faculty, serving from 1965 to 1972, was chairman of Alcan’s board from 1995 to 2002.

Travis Engen, former president and chief executive officer, said the company considered the establishment of the chair an inspired and appropriate way of recognizing Dr. Evans’ contribution to the company.

"Alcan has had a long-standing commitment to the area of education and health," said Mr. Engen. "We have always valued these types of activities in our community investments as they relate directly to our employees and their families, as well as the communities in which we do business."
