I would like to announce the appointment of Dr. Karl Stobbe as the regional assistant dean for the Niagara Campus, Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine at McMaster University effective October 1, 2007.

Dr. Stobbe is a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Family Medicine. He received his MD from the University of Western Ontario in 1982. Dr. Stobbe has practiced and taught rural family medicine for 20 years in Beamsville, Ontario and is currently an emergency physician for the West Lincoln Memorial Hospital.

At McMaster, Karl developed a rural stream of training for family practice residents. He subsequently developed and was the director of the McMaster Community and Rural Education Program (Mac-CARE). Dr. Stobbe has considerable experience teaching at all levels — undergraduate, graduate, and continuing medical education and faculty development, and he is committed to fostering interprofessional educational opportunities. He has won several awards for his excellence in teaching from both students and the Ontario College of Family Physicians.

For the past two years, Dr. Stobbe has led the expansion planning team for the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine at McMaster, developing all aspects of the medical campuses in the Waterloo and Niagara regions.

Internationally, Dr. Stobbe has worked in Laos, Iraq, and the Philippines on developing medical education. Karl’s research focus is on issues of education for rural practice, emergency triage system usage, and rural physician recruitment and retention issues.

In 2006, Karl was named a Paul Harris fellow by the Grimsby Rotary Club for his work in the community and internationally.

In his new position Dr. Stobbe will provide leadership for a key component of our expanded undergraduate MD program which is led by Dr. Alan Neville. We wish Dr. Stobbe all the best in this important undertaking.
