It is with pleasure that I announce the reappointment of Dr. Holger Schünemann as chair, Department of Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics, for the period July 1, 2014 to June 30, 2019. He has held this position since 2009.

Dr. Schünemann is a professor in the Department of Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics, with a joint appointment to the Department of Medicine. He holds the Michael Gent Chair in Healthcare Research.

A graduate of the University of Hanover's medical school in Germany, Dr. Schünemann earned his M.Sc. in epidemiology and PhD in epidemiology and community health at the University at Buffalo, State University of New York, and trained in internal medicine as well as public health and preventive medicine.

Prior to joining McMaster in 2009, he was chief of the Clinical Research Development and Information Translation Unit at the Italian National Cancer Institute. From 2001 to 2009, Dr. Schünemann was a part-time member of McMaster's Department of Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics, where he continues to teach in the Health Research Methodology program and supervise graduate students.

Dr. Schünemann maintains a robust research program, including the leadership of the McMaster GRADE centre. He also co-directs the McMaster World Health Organization Collaborating Center for Evidence-Informed Policy Making.  His research interests focus on guideline development, systematic reviews and health-related quality of life. He is author and co-author of more than 400 peer-reviewed scientific articles, book chapters and books.

In addition to his research activities, Dr. Schünemann maintains a clinical practice in internal medicine and is a member on boards and committees of international organizations, including the board of trustees for the Guideline International Network of the World Health Organization and steering committee of the Cochrane Collaboration.
