It is my pleasure to announce the appointment of Dr. Eric Brown as Acting Chair, Department of Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences at McMaster University effective July 1 - December 31, 2006, during the administrative leave of Chair Gerry Wright.
Eric Brown is an associate professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences and the co-founder and director of the McMaster High Throughput Screening Laboratory, one of the first academically-based small molecule screening labs in North America.
Dr. Brown received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry in 1992 from the University of Guelph. He spent two years as a Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada postdoctoral fellow at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Brown subsequently worked in the Boston pharmaceutical sector before joining the Department of Biochemistry at McMaster in 1998 and receiving a Medical Research Council of Canada Scholarship.
Since returning to academe, Dr. Brown has established a thriving research program in antibacterial research. His research focuses on emerging molecular targets for new antibacterial therapies. He enjoys combining phenotypic and physical studies of gene/protein function and concentrates those efforts on novel elements of bacterial physiology. He also has a keen interest in small molecule high-throughput screening for the discovery of new probes of microbes and leads for the next generation of antibacterial agents.
Dr. Brown has served on a variety of Advisory Boards and Committees at the national and international level. He currently serves on the Scientific Advisory Board of the Ontario Genomics Institute, the Nominating Committee of the American Chemical Society, and the CIHR Working Group for the Canadian Chemical Biology Network. He is also the incoming president of the Canadian Society for Biochemistry, Molecular and Cellular Biology and was recently appointed an editor of the Journal of Biological Chemistry.
