From: John G. Kelton, MD, Dean and Vice-President, Faculty of Health Sciences

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Eric Brown as chair, Department of Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences effective January 1, 2008 - June 30, 2013

Dr. Brown received a M.Sc. and a Ph.D. (Biochemistry, 1992) from the University of Guelph.  After completing studies as a Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada postdoctoral fellow at Harvard Medical School in 1995, Dr. Brown spent three years working in the Boston pharmaceutical sector on antibacterial drug discovery.

Dr. Brown joined the Department of Biochemistry at McMaster in 1998.  He is currently an associate professor with tenure and director of the McMaster High Throughput Screening Lab.  Dr. Brown has participated in the administration of the department as the assistant chair, research and, in 2006, as acting chair of the department.

Eric Brown's research interests address the inadequacies of conventional antibiotics, with research into poorly understood aspects of bacterial physiology. His research has been recognized with a Tier II Canada Research Chair in Chemical Biology (2006) and a Merck Frosst early career award from the Canadian Society for Biochemistry, Molecular and Cell Biology (2005).

Dr. Brown has served on a variety of advisory boards and committees at the national and international level.  He is currently a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Ontario Genomics Institute, the Nominating Committee of the American Chemical Society, the CIHR Working Group for the Canadian Chemical Biology Network, the Gairdner Foundation Medical Review Panel, and the 2007 co-chair of the 50th Annual Meeting of the Canadian Society of Biochemistry and Molecular & Cell Biology.  Dr. Brown is a past president of the Canadian Society for Biochemistry and Molecular & Cellular Biology and an editor of the Journal of Biological Chemistry

I hope you will join me in congratulating Dr. Brown on his appointment.
