I am pleased to announce that Dr. Irwin Walker has been appointed the new Joseph E. DesRoches Chair in Bone Marrow Transplantation, effective November 1, 2015.

The Chair is being endowed through funds from a former patient, Joe DesRoches and others, including the Department of Medicine. An event to celebrate the appointment was held with the donor family this week.

Dr. Walker obtained his Bachelor of Medicine from the University of Melbourne. In 1971, he became a resident in hematology at McMaster.

He is currently a professor in the Division of Hematology and Thromboembolism in the Department of Medicine and an associate member of the Department of Oncology. Dr. Walker is also director of the Hamilton Bone Marrow Transplant Program.

During his research career Walker has looked into the development of haploidentical, or half-related, donor transplantation, prevention of graft versus host disease, and the development of hemophilia-related software programs, the Canadian Hemophilia Registry, and epidemiological data relating to hemophilia. He has been president of the Canadian Blood and Marrow Transplant Group.

Dr. Walker is a member of the World Federation of Hemophilia Data and Demographics Committee and co-led the twinning of the Hamilton Hemophilia Program with Belgrade, Serbia.
