I am pleased to announce the reappointment of Dr. Norm Buckley as chair, Department of Anesthesia, for the period July 1, 2014 to June 30, 2017. He has held this role since 2004.

Dr. Buckley obtained a BA in psychology from McMaster in 1977. Subsequently, he graduated from McMaster University Medical School in 1982. He completed his anesthesia residency at McMaster and Stanford Universities from 1983 to 1987 and a clinical scholarship at McMaster in 1988, following which he joined the Faculty of Health Sciences at McMaster University as an assistant professor.

He is the inaugural director of the Michael G. DeGroote National Pain Centre at McMaster which, among other accomplishments, has established the website for the Canadian Guideline for Safe and Effective Use of Opioids for Chronic Non-Cancer Pain to allow easy access for physicians and health care professions. Dr. Buckley was appointed acting scientific director for the Michael G. DeGroote Institute for Pain Research and Care earlier this year.

His particular interests are pain, both acute and chronic. His clinical practice is divided between chronic pain management and anesthesia, with an interest in pediatric practice.

Dr. Buckley served as medical director of the Pain Management Centre at Hamilton Health Sciences from its opening in 2002 until 2014. He has held several other hospital administrative posts, including operating room director (Chedoke-McMaster Hospitals) chief of anesthesia (Chedoke-McMaster Hospitals) and deputy chief of anesthesia (Hamilton Health Sciences).
