Infectious Diseases Residency Program
Prerequisites
Ticks bites in North America can be benign, or transmit infectious
diseases such as Lyme Disease or Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever.
Residents who are eligible for Ontario Ministry of Health Funded training can obtain information on the application process for our program by visiting the CaRMS website (Canadian Residency Matching Service) at www.carms.ca
All other residents should contact Postgraduate MD Education at McMaster University prior to contacting the program director. If you are unsure if you qualify for training in Ontario, you should contact the Postgraduate MD Education office. Further information is also available at the Ontario College of Physicians website.
Interviews will be offered to all acceptable candidates after review of their applications. Interviews will take place in late September
All residents training in Infectious Diseases at McMaster University
must have minimum of three years of training in an accredited Internal
Medicine Residency Training Program. All applicants must meet the published
requirements for eligibility available on the McMaster University overview
and Provincial Eligibility page. Information regarding licensure requirements
are available at
the
College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario website.

MedicalSchool Transcript
- Reference Letters – At least 3 reference letters are required. One of these letters must be from the resident’s Internal Medicine Program Director. Letters from other residents will not be accepted.
- Personal Letter – A personal letter of up to 750 words should be included that outlines the resident’s motivation for choosing a career in Infectious Diseases and reasons for applying to McMaster University.
- Curriculum vitae
- International Medical Graduates should also submit proof of citizenship status, documentation of prior postgraduate training and medical practice experience, and score reports from the Medical Council of Canada Evaluating Examination/Qualifying Examination.
- Proof of citizenship MUST be submitted with each application since only Canadian Citizens, Permanent residents or Landed Immigrants can apply to CaRMS positions in Ontario. One of the following documents must be submitted: Canadian birth certificate
- Permanent Resident card (both sides of the card)
- Record of Landing, clearly showing the date of landing
- Passport page showing Canadian citizenship
Review Process
Applications submitted after September 1will not be considered. References and other supporting documents which arrive after the file review has opened will be considered as long as they are received within two weeks of the file opening date.
Interviews
Invitation / Notification Information: All applications
will be reviewed. Personal interviews are required; but only offered
to short-listed candidates. Applicants will be contacted by email for
interviews
Details regarding Interview: Interviews are a full
day with meetings with various faculty members as well as meeting the
Infectious Diseases trainees.
