Infectious Diseases Residency Program
STD Clinic
A 2 month STD clinic experience is mandatory for all MM and ID/MM residents. During the 2 month rotation residents will be supervised by a number of attendings in the STD clinic.
Medical Expert
- To learn an approach to diagnosing and managing sexually transmitted infections.
- To clearly document patient information and collate and synthesize data in a timely manner during clinics.
Communicator
- To learn how to take an effective sexual history.
- To gain experience in counseling patients around difficult issues (ie STDs, chronic infections).
Collaborator
- To communicate effectively with clinic staff, public health and referring physicians.
- To ensure that the patient has effective follow-up and is connected with appropriate supports in their community.
Manager
- To learn how to effectively manage patients in a limited amount of time and with the limited resources available.
- To learn how to effectively run an outpatient clinic to manage STDs and other infections of concern to Public Health.
Scholar
- To understand the evidence available in the field of STDs.
- To apply newly- learned information to patient care where appropriate and understand the challenges of doing this in a high volume outpatient clinic
Professional
- To be professional with all patients and staff at all times, including appropriate respect for confidentiality.
- To understand and respect diversity at all levels
Health Advocate
- To understand how physicians can advocate on behalf of individual patients as well as for the larger patient population
- To assist patients in accessing medications and address the other determinants of health which impact their care.
- To gain experience in harm prevention and health
promotion teaching with patients as this relates to STDs
