Infectious Diseases Residency Program
Undergraduate
Treatment of resistant infections has become increasingly difficult
in the era of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.
Block electives are available at all four (4) sites. Because of the clinical complexity of infectious diseases, students willing to do an elective in Infectious Diseases are expected to have already completed a clerkship rotation in either General Internal Medicine or Paediatrics.
Electives at all sites have been highly recommended by previous elective students. The elective experience consists of evaluating and following patients referred to the Infectious Diseases service, including patients in the Emergency Room, the Intensive Care Unit, and on the inpatient wards. Students will also be expected to attend academic rounds (Regional Infectious Diseases Rounds, Journal Club, Infectious Diseases Research Rounds, and Microbiology Plate Rounds). There are no on-call or weekend expectations for this rotation.
Students wishing to do an elective with a particular supervisor may contact that specific supervisor for initial approval, but the elective request still requires final approval from Dr. El-Helou (to ensure availability). The Electives Coordinator of the Undergraduate MD Program also must approve all electives.
Students from medical schools external to the Michael G. De Groote
School of Medicine are asked to contact the Electives
Coordinator of
the Undergraduate Program prior to applying.
