Infectious Diseases Residency Program

Postgraduate

Disk-diffusion testing for antimicrobial susceptibility.

One- and two-month electives are available at all four sites. All four sites afford housestaff the opportunity to see a variety of clinical infectious diseases, with an emphasis on principles of microbiology, disease pathophysiology, clinical skills, and antimicrobial therapy. Our staff is knowledgeable and skilled in evidence-based medicine, allowing trainees the opportunity to apply research into practice.

The elective experience consists of evaluating and following patients referred to the Infectious Diseases service, including patients in the Emergency Room, the Intensive Care Unit, and on the inpatient wards. Students will also be expected to attend academic rounds (Regional Infectious Diseases Rounds, Journal Club, Infectious Diseases Research Rounds, and Microbiology Plate Rounds). Residents may be expected to give a presentation at the Regional ID Rounds.

Although elective preference is given to Internal Medicine trainees, we encourage and try to accommodate trainees in all postgraduate areas. We make an effort to place trainees at sites where they will get a clinical experience most relevant to their training and future practice. Although most of our elective residents have come from anesthesia, critical care medicine, family medicine, pediatrics, and radiation oncology, we are happy to accept elective students from other specialties and subspecialties. We also encourage and try to accommodate trainees from residency programs external to McMaster University.

Residents wishing to do an elective with a particular supervisor may contact that specific supervisor for initial approval, but the elective request still requires final approval from Dr. El-Helou (to ensure elective availability). All electives must be approved by the resident’s Program Director.
