Distance Education

Distance Ed Brochure

The Department of Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics is pleased to announce their new distance education initiative. In order to broaden the reach of our Health Research Methodology graduate training program and offer flexibility to those who are challenged by time or distance, we will be offering some of our acclaimed graduate level courses in an online format.  Students will not have any on-site requirements but will have the opportunity to interact with students and faculty in a virtual environment.

Is online learning right for you?

Online teaching and learning is different in many respects from what occurs in-class courses.  Although the material that we cover in our online Health Research Methodology courses is very similar to the in-class equivalents, the manner in which you receive the information and how you interact with the instructors and your peers is quite different.  Many people prefer online learning and the flexibility and self-direction that it provides, however, it is not for everyone!  We must emphasize that our online courses require similar amounts of student time for studying and completing assignments as our in-class courses (and some argue more).

It has been suggested that students who enjoy and excel in online courses possess certain traits, to varying degrees.  These include self-direction, discipline and independence, motivation, computer proficiency, joy and comfort of reading and writing, and the ability to communicate effectively in writing.

Here are some questions that may help you decide if online learning is for you*.
