This open forum event will include multiple poster and oral sessions over the course of three days. Winning posters will be on display in the Jan and Mien Heersink Reading Pavilion the afternoon of Wednesday, May 18th.

Call for Poster and Oral Abstract Submissions
Graduate Students and Postdoctoral Fellows training in the Faculty of Health Sciences are invited to participate in this year’s FHS Research Plenary Poster and Oral Sessions.
Those interested in presenting are encouraged to review the following guidelines on abstract submission.

The deadline for receipt of all abstract submissions is March 17th, 2011 by 4:00pm. Abstract submissions should be submitted by email to the relevant graduate program. A complete listing of program contacts may be found below.
Top abstract submissions will be selected within each graduate program and those selected will be notified of their success. Presenters will have the opportunity to showcase their work at one of the event’s poster or oral sessions, and will have their names published in this year’s program and on the FHS Graduate Studies website. Winning presentations will also be celebrated on May 18th at the FHS Research Plenary Awards Reception.
We hope you will join us as we honour the research achievements of FHS graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, and celebrate excellence in the Health Sciences at the 2011 FHS Research Plenary.

CATEGORY A AWARDS – Graduate Students
Achievement Awards for Health Sciences Graduate Students
The Faculty of Health Sciences Graduate Programs invites nominations for Graduate Student Awards. Individuals in Faculty of Health Sciences Graduate Programs, or in an Interdisciplinary Program with a Faculty of Health Sciences Research Supervisor, are eligible for consideration.
These awards will require a nomination form. Winners will be chosen by a selection committee and will be publicly recognized at the Faculty of Health Sciences Research Plenary Awards Reception on May 18th, 2011.

CATEGORY B AWARDS – Postdoctoral Fellows
Achievement Awards for Health Sciences Postdoctoral Fellows
To recognize excellence in postdoctoral fellowship training, the Faculty of Health Sciences Graduate Programs is calling for nominations of postdoctoral fellows who have a faculty research supervisor in the Faculty of Health Sciences.
These awards will require a nomination form. Winners will be chosen by a selection committee and will be publicly recognized at the Faculty of Health Sciences Research Plenary Awards Reception on May 18th, 2011.

CATEGORY C AWARDS – Program Awards for Graduate Students
The Faculty of Health Sciences Graduate Programs and affiliated Interdisciplinary Graduate Programs are invited to select recipients for a third category of awards for graduate students. These awards do not require nomination forms. Inquiries from interested registered graduate students in the Faculty of Health Sciences or FHS related interdisciplinary programs (Biomedical Engineering, Neuroscience, eHealth, Health Policy and Global Health) with a Faculty of Health Sciences Research Supervisor should be directed to the relevant Assistant Dean or Program Director who can advise whether they are being considered for these awards.

CATEGORY D AWARDS – FHS Faculty
The Health Sciences Graduate Student Federation (HSGSF) in partnership with the Faculty of Health Sciences Graduate Programs Office is accepting nominations for two awards to recognize Faculty Members in Health Sciences who excel in teaching and/or supervision. These awards will require a nomination form. Winners will be chosen by a selection committee and will be publicly recognized at the 2011 Faculty of Health Sciences Research Plenary Awards Reception on May 18th, 2011.

Graduate Students
GENERAL INFORMATION FOR CATEGORY A AWARDS
Eligibility
Graduate students registered in good standing in a Health Sciences program between January 2010 through March 15, 2011 are eligible for these awards.
Deadline
The deadline for receipt of graduate student nomination materials is 4:00pm on March 15th, 2011. Completed nominations should be submitted to the Faculty of Health Sciences Graduate Program Office, MDCL 2235, or via email to Elizabeth Williams at williaeg@mcmaster.ca. Only completed nomination forms and the material provided will be considered by the Selection Committee. All information, including nomination forms, will be kept confidential.
Students with a non-FHS research supervisor are now eligible for these awards. For these students, this deadline has been extended until March 28th.
Teaching Assistant Excellence Award
This award is for graduate students in Health Sciences who in their work as a teaching assistant have demonstrated excellence in their teaching contributions. Nominations should include: 1) one or more letters of support from the faculty supervisor(s) of the course that the graduate student supported as a teaching assistant. These letters should outline the reason for the nomination and can be supplemented by copies of teaching evaluations and additional letters of support from students.

Graduate Student Publication Award
This award is to recognize outstanding publication achievements of graduate students in the Faculty of Health Sciences. Nominations should include: 1) one or more letters of support from the supervisor and other faculty members that describe the outstanding publication achievements of the individual and 2) a copy of the trainee’s CV that details their publication record.

Graduate Student Entrepreneur Award
This award is for graduate students in Health Sciences who have demonstrated innovation and entrepreneurship in their research studies, such as making an outstanding discovery, patent or knowledge translation. Nominations should include: 1) one or more letters of support from the supervisor and other faculty members that describe the individual’s outstanding innovation and entrepreneurship, and 2) a copy of the trainee’s CV.

Graduate Student Leadership Award
This award is for graduate students in Health Sciences who have made outstanding contributions to the broader community, by leading graduate student initiatives. The purpose of the award is to recognize excellence in leadership and generosity in initiatives to improve the community for other trainees. Nominations should include: 1) one or more letters of support from students, faculty and/or staff that detail the reason for the nomination, and 2) a copy of the trainee’s CV.
Postdoctoral Fellows
GENERAL INFORMATION FOR CATEGORY B AWARDS
Eligibility
PDFs who have a faculty research supervisor in the Faculty of Health Sciences and who were in training between January 2010 through March 15, 2011 are eligible for consideration.

Please note: individuals who were in their final year of training between January 2010 through March 15, 2011 are eligible.

Program Awards for Graduate Students
GENERAL INFORMATION FOR CATEGORY C AWARDS
Eligibility
Graduate Students who were registered in good standing in an FHS or affiliated Interdisciplinary MSc, PhD, MD/PhD and CIP programs between January 2010 through March 15, 2011 are eligible.
Deadline
The deadline for receipt of all student award winners by relevant Graduate Programs is 4:00 p.m. on March 15th, 2011. Assistant Deans/Program Directors are asked to deliver student lists and email addresses to the Office of the Associate Dean of Graduate Studies (Health Sciences), MDCL 2235, or by e-mail to Elizabeth Williams at williaeg@mcmaster.ca. All information will be kept confidential.
CATEGORY C – Graduate Students
The Faculty of Health Sciences Graduate Programs and affiliated Interdisciplinary Graduate Programs are invited to select recipients for a third category of awards for graduate students. Faculty of Health Sciences Graduate Programs Excellence Award
This award will be given to all students in thesis-based graduate programs who achieved a rating of excellent for their last two, or more, supervisory committee meetings. Individuals who were registered in programs between January 2010 through March 15, 2011 are eligible.
Faculty of Health Sciences Graduate Programs Outstanding Achievement Award
This award is for graduate students in their final year of a Master’s or Doctoral program who have made outstanding achievements, based on the opinion of their graduate program. This award can be given to a maximum of 10%-15% of all students in the final year of a Master’s or Doctoral program affiliated with the Faculty of Health Sciences. Individuals who were registered in programs between January 2010 through March 15, 2011 are eligible.
Faculty of Health Sciences Graduate Programs Outstanding Thesis Awards
This award is for doctoral students who completed their defence during the period from January 2010 to March 2011 and achieved an overall rating of excellent on their thesis dissertation, or were nominated for consideration of the Gold Medal and/or an External (e.g. CAGS) Thesis Dissertation Award.
FHS Faculty Awards
GENERAL INFORMATION FOR CATEGORY D AWARDS
