About the Global Health Office

Faculty of Health Sciences, Global Health Office (GHO) was first established in 1990 as a Centre for International Health and has evolved since its inception taking heath education off campus, beyond the borders of Canada, and into every corner of the world. The Office's activities are wide-spread and multi-dimensional representing the Faculty of Health Sciences in various facets from building capacity in higher education and supporting international activities, to establishing interprofessional linkages, hosting scholars, and coordinating partnerships with international institutions for collaborative development projects in health science education.

Major global projects include establishing the School of Nursing at the Aga Khan University (AKU), Pakistan followed by a long-standing mutual relationship of capacity building that still exists today with the AKU and its partner institutions; development of an oncology nursing program with the University of the West Indies in Trinidad and Tobago; and development of the College of Health Sciences at the University of Sharjah, United Arab Emirates. McMaster's global footprint is far reaching including mutual partnerships with instituions in Brazil, Haiti, India, Japan, the Netherlands, North America, Tanzania, Thailand, the People's Republic of China, Portugal, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and South Korea.

Guiding Principles

The Global Health Office has a strategic role in identifying and supporting the development of international opportunities in health science education for the mutual benefit of both the Faculty of Health Sciences and the international community as a whole. The following principles outline our role in the global community.

  • Educational programs which lead to the granting of a variety of undergraduate, graduate and in-service certificate qualifications for full-fee paying international students.
  • Training of health care professionals through professional up-to-date programs, "training the trainers", and health care leadership and management development programs.
  • Consultations and project management for a variety of international clients.
  • Service oriented development activities for organizations such as the World Health Organization, the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), and InterHealth Canada.
  • Franchising of the commercial rights to use successful components of the FHS educational portfolio.
  • Development and sale of course materials for use as teaching and training resources.
