Firestone Institute for Respiratory Health

Welcome to the FIRH!

The Firestone Institute for Respiratory Health (FIRH) is based out of St. Joseph's Healthcare in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada and is affiliated with McMaster University. Clinical, research and educational activities are integrated and largely collaborative within the FIRH. The intent of this institute is to provide optimal patient care through clinical practice, translational research and the training of health care professionals.


St. Joe's Researchers Set New Records

Dr. Martin Kolb’s latest publication is Firestone’s fifth paper to be published in the New England Journal of Medicine in recent months, a remarkable achievement.

New research from the Firestone Institute for Respiratory Health at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamiltonhas reported the results of a combined regimen of nintedanib plus sildenafil. While this combination was not more effective than nintedanib alone in improving symptoms, when used in the treatment of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), it showed remarkable effects on lung function.

St. Joe's Researcher Awarded $180,000 for Tissue Engineering Project - Dr. Jeremy Hirota

Dr. Jeremy (Jay) Hirota, Canada Research Chair in Respiratory Mucosal Immunology at the Firestone Institute for Respiratory Health at St. Joe’s, is one of three researchers to receive an infrastructure grant from the Canadian Foundation for Innovation (CFI).

6th Frederick E Hargreave Lectureship - November 5, 2018

The 6th Hargreave Lectureship will be held on Monday, November 5th in the Miller Auditorium, 2nd Level of the Juravinski Innovation Tower at St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton, Ontario. Reception will commence at 5 p.m. in the 2nd Level Lobby and the Lecture to commence at 5:30 p.m. Dr. Chris Brightling is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Leicester, National Institute for Health Research Senior Investigator, former Wellcome Trust Senior Clinical Fellow, and an Honorary Consultant Respiratory Physician at the Institute for Lung Health, Leicester, UK.
