Practice Guidelines Summer Institute

Objective
To provide a diverse group of clinical and health services research trainees from across Canada the opportunity to participate in an in-depth critical examination of practice guideline and evidence synthesis approaches, as well as issues related to their application in advancing a quality agenda in cancer control.

Workshop Participants
Trainees in health or clinical programs such as medicine, primary care, rehabilitation, oncology, surgery, nursing, health services research, health policy/administration, epidemiology, nutrition, pharmacy, etc. that have an interest in applying evidence to cancer control.

Trainees include graduate students, post docs, research fellows, clinical fellows, residents, etc.

Note, expertise in the oncology field is not a prerequisite for participation. It is expected that participants will have different levels of experience in oncology, clinical practice guidelines or in evidence-based methodologies.

Brouwers, and Dr. George Browman of the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer, Dr. Ian Graham, Vice-President of Knowledge Translation at Canadian Institutes of Health Research, Dr. Ralph Meyer, Director, National Cancer Institute of Canada Clinical Trials Group, Dr. Valerie Palda, Medical Director, Guidelines Advisory Committee, and Dr. Jonathan Sussman, Associate Director, Supportive Cancer Care Research Unit, Juravinski Cancer Centre. Registration
Registration is limited to 30 participants. Interested individuals should submit the registration form with a current Curriculum Vitae (2 pages only) and a one-page letter outlining what they hope to accomplish by attending the Practice Guidelines Summer Institute.

Travel, Facilities and Accommodations
The Summer Institute is a fully sponsored event that will be held from June 23 to June 25, 2009, at the McMaster University Campus, in Hamilton, Ontario. The CEP will pay for the following participant expenses:

Travel

Air and/or ground travel (economy) to and from the Practice Guidelines Summer Institute.

Accommodations

A single room at Les Prince Hall on McMaster’s campus for the evenings of June 22 to 25 inclusive.

Meals
Breakfast, lunch and dinner, as arranged by the CEP, from June 23 to June 25 inclusive.

Workshop materials

All materials distributed prior to, or during, the Guidelines Summer Institute will be provided to participants free of charge.

Format
Led by faculty and leaders in the evidence and clinical practice guideline field, the format will consist of panel discussions, interactive presentations, group discussions, tutorials, and break out sessions with the opportunity to review current and controversial issues around the guideline development and evidence enterprise.

Curriculum
The curriculum of the Practice Guideline Summer Institute will include the following:

Conceptual

  • Core principles underlying the guideline life cycle.
  • Philosophies of guideline development, their strengths and limitations.
  • The guideline development cycle.

Developmental

  • Features of an effective guideline panel.
  • Core methodologies used to develop practice guidelines including systematic review, adaptation, and formal consensus.
  • How to use evidence to inform recommendations.
  • To understand special considerations related to the use of primary oncology literature to develop practice guidelines.

Evaluation

  • The strengths and limitations of tools and approaches to evaluate practice guidelines (AGREE II Instrument).

Application

  • Frameworks and theories underlying the field of knowledge transfer and exchange (KTE).
  • How KTE frameworks and theories can be used to facilitate application of guidelines in practice and in particular, how guidelines can be used to inform decisions by patients, clinicians, administrators, and policy makers.
