The Bachelor of Health Sciences (Honours) Program gave me the opportunity and space to learn to understand myself while developing a unique skill-set useful across all aspects of my life. Thanks to BHSc I have developed both academically and personally throughout my undergrad experience. I am still only beginning to have a larger appreciation for the fantastic opportunities and learning experiences given me during my four years at BHSc.

The greatest value of the BHSc program that I found was not the information I took from individual courses, but the thought process and problem solving skills that I developed through inquiry and problem based learning. The development of these skills is an art, rather than science, just as medicine is. Instead of teaching me what is "right", the program taught me how to determine when something is "right".

The BHSc faculty are visionary folks. They understand deeply the complexity, challenges, joys and mystery of transformative learning. Not only do I remember a lot of what I learned with these people, I continue to be moved by how I learned with them. The program gave me a space to see my education as something quite different from schooling - I have come to value screwing up, being lost, and confused as essential to opening up new possibilities for growth. Most educators don't get this.

Looking back on my time at McMaster University, I am very grateful for the education I received in the Bachelor of Health Sciences program. Not only did the staff and faculty foster a strong sense of community within our program, they also taught me the necessary skills to succeed in my career in health care. In BHSc I learned how to critically think, effectively communicate and work in teams, while enjoying the learning experience the whole way through.

It has been incredibly evident to me that the BHSc program’s approach to learning applies itself to so many contexts. As a Project Leader with Katimavik, the national youth volunteer-service program, I have been able to emphasize the importance of goal-setting, reflecting, and critical thinking with the youth I oversee. Furthermore, the ability to adapt to working independently or in a group has been very valuable. My understanding of group dynamics and effective approaches to working as a team has equipped me to adopt leadership roles and encourage the young people I work with to do the same.

The BHSc program builds a foundation of knowledge that I feel is beneficial for anyone who chooses to pursue a career in health care. But most importantly, the BHSc program introduced me to a valuable set of skills that I now use every day in my training as a future health professional: the ability to think critically, to consider research evidence in clinical decision-making, to reflect on personal strengths and weaknesses, and to work collaboratively as part of an interprofessional team.
