Message from the Associate Chair of Education

Dr. Anne WongIt is an exciting time for education in the Department of Anesthesia. Our Faculty are involved in many activities, initiatives, and leadership roles in education both within the Department and in the University. The mandate of the Associate Chair of Education is to enable communication, coordination and collaboration amongst the different faculty and areas of activity in order to promote educational scholarship and faculty development in the Department of Anesthesia. Activities that support this include:

  • Overseeing and assisting in the coordination of departmental educational activities in order to promote educational scholarship
  • Advising the Chair on matters related to departmental educational activities, faculty recruitment, promotion and tenure, and faculty¬†career development
  • Providing orientation, recommendations, and assistance to faculty during recruitment, reappointment,¬† promotion and tenure and faculty development
  • Providing consultation, support, and mentorship in education.
  • Informing and promoting new educational initiatives and activities
  • Liaising amongst the different sections of the department as well as with the rest of the University
  • Representing the Department at University, provincial, and national Committees

Our strongest asset is people. Our dedication to excellence in teaching is reflected in the numerous awards that our Faculty have received over the years. We have many Educational Leaders in our Department who lend their expertise in the areas of undergraduate, postgraduate, international and simulation-based education. Educational projects are presented at our Anesthesia Research Interest Group Meetings, Annual Research Retreat and Research Exchange Day.We also have excellent support for educational research in the department, including Toni Tidy, our Department Research Coordinator and Dr. Lehana Thabane, who is a PhD biostatistician and research methodologist. The Program for Education and Development (PERD) in the Faculty of Health Sciences also is a valuable resource for educational research consultation and assistance. The Program for Faculty Development also provides excellent resources to help faculty develop their capacity as educators and scholars.

We will continue to work toward the promotion of educational excellence and scholarship in the Department of Anesthesia.
