St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton is located on James St. South, just below the mountain. It is a 370-bed acute care hospital. There are 12 Operating Rooms, 2 Cystoscopy rooms and 2 Operating Rooms in Labour and Delivery at the main hospital and 2 fully equipped Operating Rooms at the Centre for Ambulatory Health Services (CAHS), in Stoney Creek.

The main OR manages 16,500 cases per year. Another 3000 cases are managed at the CAHS, over 80% of which are eye cases. There are approximately 4000 deliveries per year.

The major surgical programs include Thoracic, major Head and Neck, Hepatobiliary and Renal Transplantation. There is a major emphasis on Minimal Access Surgery by General Surgery and Urology. Gynecology, Orthopedics, General Surgery, Plastic Surgery and Vascular Surgery are all represented in the Operating Rooms at St. Joseph's Hospital. There is an active Acute Pain Service and 3 members of the Department provide Chronic Pain Management. Two members of the Department function as Intensivists in the 15 bed ICU at St. Joseph's Hospital.

The Firestone Institute for Respiratory Health is situated at the James St. South site. The renal dialysis program is also based at St. Joseph's Hospital and all renal transplants in Hamilton are carried out at St. Joseph's.

The Department of Anesthesiology is made up of 20 Anesthesiologists. Nearly all non-in-patients are seen in the Pre-operative Assessment Unit by a staff anesthesiologist assigned to the Clinic for the day.
