Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS) is comprised of four hospital sites: Chedoke Hospital, McMaster University Medical Centre, Hamilton General Hospital, and Henderson Hospital. The Department of Anesthesia provides clinical services at McMaster, Hamilton General and the Henderson Hospital.
McMaster Hospital Site
McMaster University Medical Center (MUMC) is located in the west end of Hamilton. It is a full service acute care hospital with a focus on pediatrics and women's health. There are 8 OR's, 2 labour and delivery operating suites as well as anesthetizing locations in diagnostic imaging and the MRI suite. Out of OR sedation requirements are expanding, and 24 hour consultant coverage for the obstetrical anesthesia service is maintained. There is an active acute pain service which also provides 24 hour coverage. All inpatient pediatric services in Hamilton occur at this site and this is an area of ongoing growth and development, with a newly expanded 45 bed neonatal intensive care unit, plans for an independent pediatric ICU and the recent transfer of inpatient pediatrics from St. Joseph's Medical Center. We currently provide approximately 3600 pediatric anesthetics and are expecting this number to grow to about 5000 cases/year over the next 5 years. Total cases in the MUMC O.R. (adults/pediatrics) are approximately 10,000/yr.
McMaster is also the host hospital for the Regional High Risk Pregnancy Unit. We have approximately 3000 deliveries/year at this campus. There is a wide range of interesting medical and obstetrical problems that present for management. With an active obstetrical anesthesia consult service we are involved intimately in the perinatal care of these patients.
As you can see the main specialty interests include pediatric and obstetrical anesthesia. Research interests currently focus on peri operative nausea and vomiting, acute and chronic pain management.
Hamilton General Site
The Hamilton General and Henderson Hospital sites are referral centres with approximately 700 acute care beds between them. The Hamilton General Hospital site is on Barton Street East and the Henderson Hospital site is on Concession Street. The Hamilton General Hospital site is the Regional Centre for the Cardiovascular Programme, Trauma, Burn Care, and a major adult neurosurgical centre. This site has ten operating rooms which are slated to expand to 12 - 13 operating rooms in 2005. Approximately 8000 operations per year are performed at this site, with 1400 cardiac cases, approximately 1000 neurosurgical procedures and 400 traumas per year. This site has recently been designated as a pilot center for the management of thoraco abdominal aneurysm surgery and performs 30-50 of these cases every year.
Henderson Hospital
The Henderson Hospital site is the Regional Centre for Oncology and supports the adjacent Ontario Cancer Treatment and Research Foundation. In addition all of the joint replacement surgery for the Hamilton Health Sciences has been consolidated at this center. There are two rooms/day performing arthroplasty surgery, the vast majority are done under spinal or combined spinal epidural anesthesia. This site has approximately 7500 surgical procedures per year.
